Carrollton Mayor Wayne Garner plans to ask the City Council Monday to hold the city’s property tax rate at 4.69 mills, the same rate it’s been since Garner took office 12 years ago.
“We’ve never had to raise taxes, but we’ve rolled it back to cover for the adjustment,” he said Friday. “I’m glad we can do that again.”
Rollback is a provision of the 2000 Georgia “Taxpayer Bill of Rights” to protect taxpayers from indirect tax increases due to increases in property values. The millage rate is “rolled back” to compensate for the extra tax generated by a higher tax digest.
City Manager Casey Coleman said last month that the city has held the same millage rate since 1993.
