ATLANTA – A moratorium on pumping surface water into the Floridan Aquifer that supplies most of the coast would become permanent under legislation filed Thursday.
Senate Bill 306 by Sen. William Ligon, R-Brunswick, seeks to extend the ban indefinitely before it expires this year.
“The concern is that if we get surface waters that aren’t thoroughly cleaned, they could contaminate that water,” Ligon said. “We don’t want to do that. We have to protect our water in south Georgia.”
Cosponsoring the bill are fellow GOP Sens. Buddy Carter of Pooler, Jack Hill of Reidsville and Judson Hill of Marietta.
