Adoptable (Official) Georgia Dogs for December 23, 2024

The Athens Banner-Herald notes that the Official State Dog of Georgia is “the Adoptable Dog.”

What is Georgia’s state dog?

Despite the popularity of the UGA Bulldogs and attempts to make it official, the bulldog is not Georgia’s state dog. It’s actually not any single breed. As written in Georgia’s code § 50-3-88, the state dog is the “adoptable dog.”

This was decided in 2016 through Georgia House Bill 561, in which Georgia’s leaders said they wanted to promote responsible stewardship of pets as well as responsible rescues and adoptions.

Similarly, Delaware’s state dog is “Rescue Dogs.”

Colorado also recognizes adoptable dogs as the official state dog.
