Adoptable Georgia Dogs for July 30, 2013

Yesterday, we were testing a different way of embedding the dog photos in the morning email to reduce the load on our mail server; several folks mentioned that the pictures didn’t come through for them, so we’re re-running yesterday’s dogs. And there’s a plea for help below.

A beautiful young female English Bulldog in the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter; she is available for adoption right now; UGA fans should rush over there to save her.

Summer is an easy-going, well-behaved female boxer who is available for adoption from Atlanta Boxer Rescue in Mableton, Ga. She does not jump on people and rarely barks. She is a snuggler, loves to lie in your arms, and follows you around the house. She likes to “sit” and “stay” at her own pace. Her fosters we are working on commands with her.

Summer is a young female Beagle/Jack Russell Terrier who is available for adoption from the Fayette County Humane Society.

Summer is a young, female Carolina Dog/German Shepherd Dog Mix who is 7-8 months old and weighs about 55 pounds. She is a snuggle bunny, sweet, calm and does well with children and other dogs. Summer is available for adoption from The Pet Nanny in Rockmart, Ga.

Earlier this month, we told you about a group of volunteers who were sending 18 dogs to a rescue group in Maryland to save their lives. This is not uncommon for Georgia groups, as Georgia has a high number of euthanizations, and some states actually have a shortage of adoptable dogs.

Well, those volunteers are at it again, raising money to send 15 dogs from a high-kill shelter in Chatsworth, Ga to a rescue group in Maryland. The transport costs will be roughly $1500, and they are also raising money to pay some vet bills incurred in rescuing dogs.

This represents one end of the spectrum of rescue groups – a small, dedicated group of local residents who cannot sit by and watch as shelter animals are put down simply because there isn’t space in the shelter. They often operate on a shoestring budget of whatever they can raise a few dollars at a time.

The other end of the spectrum is the large, Metro Atlanta organizations that may be saving hundreds of dogs each year and are run at a professional level. Tomorrow, we’ll show you some of the work one of those groups does.

Here’s today’s Bonus Dog, from Barrow County Animal Shelter in Winder, Ga. His name is Tank.

Tank is listed as a Pointer, but I’m thinking there might be some hound dog in his background. Tank is neutered, up-to-date on his shots, has lived peacefully with another dog, and the volunteers say he’s a great, friendly, playful dog. In order to help him find a home, he’s now free to a good home. A home visit will be required, but he’s worth it.
