Adoptable Georgia Dogs for August 28, 2015

The following dogs are all urgent at the Monroe County Animal Shelter in Forsyth, GA and will be euthanized on Monday, August 31, 2015 unless arrangements for adoption or foster are made before then.

Lucy is a young female hound who came in emaciated and has been putting on some weight.

Lucy needs a family to teach her how to be a dog who is loved and cared for. Available at Monroe County Animal Control 157 L Cary Bittick Dr. Forsyth, GA 31029 478-994-7976.

Skylar is a spayed female Shepherd mix who had a family who loved her, but they couldn’t afford to care for her anyomore and she wound up on death row at Monroe County Animal Shelter, from where she was originally adopted. She’s a wonderful dog who deserves a second chance.

Ponder is a 3-4 year old Foxhound or Coonhound male. He’s a little bit shy, but likes people and other dogs.

Protecting Your Dog at the Dog Park

Last night at the dog park, two dogs nearly died and one of them may die yet. In the off-leash area, a large mixed-breed attacked a Sheepdog and couldn’t be restrained by its owner.

Eventually, the sheepdog’s owner was able to choke the large mixed-breed unconscious. Absent the attacked dog’s owner having the presence of mind and testicular fortitude, I have no doubt the sheepdog would have been killed.

The mixed breed dog’s owner is likely to find animal control impounding the dog and in danger of euthanasia. Especially since it was the second time that dog attacked another dog in the same session. If the sheepdog owner had been armed at the time (he’s a police officer) it’s very likely the mixed-breed would have been shot.

My advice to my fellow dog owners is that if you are physically unable to restrain your dog, you should not take it to an off-leash area ever. Period.

If your dog does anything that could remotely be considered an attack beyond the scope of play, you should restrain your dog and leave immediately. If there’s any question about your dog’s behavior, restrain them and leave immediately. Sometimes the atmosphere can get a little out of hand at the dog park, so know how to recognize when your dog is getting too excited and separate them and let them cool down.

In this case a stupid owner endangered a handful of dogs and it’s likely her dog that will pay the ultimate price.

It’s great that you rescued a dog, but please don’t kill it by being a stupid owner.
