Both parties in the House announced conferees to the budget conference that is expected to start Thursday with a breakfast meeting of the leaders of the House and Senate Budget Committees.
Republicans named Budget Chair Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), along with Reps. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), Tom Price (R-Ga.), and Diane Black (R-Tenn.).
Democrats named Budget Committee ranking member Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), James Clyburn (D-S.C.), and Appropriation Committee ranking member Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.).
Ryan offered the motion to conference with the Senate, which clarified that during those meetings, it will not be in order for members of the House to offer motions to instruct conferees or appoint new conferees. It passed by unanimous consent.
Ryan and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) issued a joint statement late Wednesday that said they are both looking to cooperate on 2014 funding levels after several months of making no progress.
“In the months ahead, we hope both sides can work together to grow the economy and tackle our debt responsibly,” they said. “We recognize the many differences between the House and Senate budget resolutions and the challenges we face in reaching an agreement.
