Tybee Island getting more sand | savannahnow.com

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking for contractors to help shore up Tybee Island for a new round of beach renourishment set to begin this fall.

The project, set to begin in November, is expected to take about four months to complete and aims to increase storm damage reduction.

“(The sand) naturally washes away — migrates south,” said Billy Birdwell, corps spokesman. “We did a study on this several years ago… The sand would naturally migrate down from South Carolina to Tybee, but because of the federal navigation project there — the shipping channel — because it’s between South Carolina and Georgia, the sand falls into it. Not all of the sand, but a lot of it and it doesn’t naturally migrate down to Tybee.”
