The race for Stockbridge mayor is heating up, and a woman was arrested and charged with impersonating a city code officer, accused of telling businesses to take down campaign signs for one candidate.
Current Stockbridge Mayor Mark Alarcon is running against Houston Nelson, Vanessa Holiday and Tim Thompson.
CBS Atlanta obtained a report from Henry County police that said on Sept. 26, Holiday said that she was informed by a city code enforcement officer that a woman was pretending to be code enforcement and telling businesses that they would have to remove campaign signs or face $500 fines.
The police report stated that Holiday then questioned employees at one business, Pueblo Mio, a Mexican restaurant, and got a description of the woman who allegedly told employees that the signs would result in fines.
“Ms. Holiday spoke with members of her campaign staff and was able to come up with some ideas of who the possible suspect may be,” the report reads. “Ms. Holiday returned to the businesses and showed the employees pictures of a possible suspect. Ms. Holiday stated that the person was identified as Ms. Sahara [sic] Hekmati, a person she had dealt with previously.”
Hekmati said her first name is actually spelled Sahar and that she was arrested and charged with criminal trespass. CBS Atlanta’s Sonia Moghe spoke with Hekmati on Wednesday, and Hekmati denied any involvement in the incident.
“I never touched the signs,” Hekmati said. “There was no investigation … I’m devastated. It’s like the Henry County Republican Party as a whole is after me.”
