Clarke school district gets first clean audit from state in years | Online Athens

A year after a grand jury called out the Clarke County School District for slipshod recordkeeping, the district has gotten its first clean audit from the state in years — maybe decades.

The state Department of Audits and Accounts notified school officials in July that the district’s most recent annual financial report, for the 2012 fiscal year, had passed inspection without any “findings” of inadequate documentation or faulty accounting, according to Larry Hammel, the school system’s chief financial officer.

“This is the first time in 34 years we have not had a finding,” said long-time Clarke County Board of Education member Vernon Payne.

The report outlines the school district’s income for 2012 — about $168.9 million, mostly from state revenues and about $66.1 million in local property tax revenues. Both numbers are down from 2011, when Clarke schools had overall revenues of about $180 million, including $68.6 million in local property taxes.
