Harris to seek city school board seat – Times-Georgian: News

The owner of a clothing store that’s been operating for 50 years hopes to bring her expertise to another enduring institution — the Carrollton Board of Education.

April Harris, who bought The Squire Shop in 2005, will campaign for the school board seat to be vacated by longtime member Joe McGinnis at the end of the year.

The 32-year-old owner of the menswear store said she knows she would have “huge shoes to fill” if elected to replace Ward 2’s McGinnis, who will have served on the board for 28 years when he steps down in December.

Harris, a 1999 graduate of Carrollton High, has been involved in several civic organizations — like the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, Carrollton DawnBreakers Rotary Club and Carrollton Main Street — since owning The Squire Shop, but she’d like to broaden her horizons even more by entering the realm of education.

“I’m civic-minded and education-oriented, and I want to the see the school system’s heritage continue,” said Harris. “I want to give back to the schools, since they’ve given so much to me.”

The 2004 University of West Georgia graduate — majoring in business management with a minor in human resources — said her strong business background, coupled with a willingness to educate herself on today’s education issues, make her the ideal candidate for the Ward 2 seat.

“I will bring to the board a lot of experience in crafting a budget, which is obviously very important to a school system these days,” Harris said. “I think the board has done a great job and has made a lot of difficult, fair decisions. It has to take a lot of things into consideration, and I’m the type of person who stays more organized when they’re doing a lot of things.”
