How hot was it? Not very, thankfully. Savannah’s summer has been mild so far.

The city’s average temperature, as measured at the airport, was a degree and a half below average in July, the National Weather Service’s preliminary data shows. May was similarly cooler than usual, by 1.6 degrees.

“Late July, early August is the hottest time of the year,” said meteorologist Vern Beaver of the National Weather Service in Charleston. “For it to be below normal makes it seem cooler. We’re used to suffering, and it’s not that bad.”

If a degree and a half doesn’t sound significant, consider that high temperatures were slow in coming and we’ve also avoided any blistering heat waves so far.
