Beer is on the bill in a few blocks of downtown Macon and Tattnall Square Park during Mercer University’s home football games, thanks to an ordinance Macon City Council passed Tuesday night.
The vote to allow open alcohol containers for tailgating was 13-0, with councilmen Lonnie Miley and Virgil Watkins absent. A few council members argued that if the city pays the inevitable cleanup and security costs on city property for the tailgating crowd, various festivals that use city streets should also be exempt from such costs. In previous meetings, some members asked that Mercer be billed for at least part of the expense.
Councilwoman Elaine Lucas said other events — including Soul Jam, organized by her husband, state Sen. David Lucas — would welcome a break on security and cleanup costs. She said she looks forward to “new legislation” from Council President James Timley that would have the city pay those costs for other events.
