Fulton Commission Rejects State Law to Limit Millage Rate | WABE 90.1 FM

Fulton County has taken the first step toward what is shaping up to be legal battle over whether the county can raise its millage rate.

The county commission passed a resolution Wednesday rejecting Georgia House Bill 604, a measure Governor Nathan Deal has signed to stop the county from raising its property tax rate until 2015.

Fulton Commission Chairman John Eaves says the bill infringes on the county’s right of home rule. “We’re not doing it right now in terms of raising taxes. Don’t anticipate doing it going into the 2014 budget,” says Eaves. “But we believe, firmly believe that we have the right. And we don’t want that right stripped away from us by a state government.”
