Wood abruptly resigns city manager job – The Cherokee Ledger-News: Top Stories

Ten minutes prior to the start of the first Canton City Council meeting of 2014, City Manager Scott Wood turned in his resignation letter. He did not attend the meeting.

The council approved, 5-1, with Ward I Hooky Huffman opposing, Ward III Councilman Glen Cummins’ added agenda item of Wood’s resignation.

“I am not angry with anyone and in many ways hate that this time has come, but the truth of the matter is that from time to time new and fresh perspectives are needed in various positions, be they elected or appointed,” Wood wrote in his resignation letter, “and so it is with mixed emotions that I offer my resignation as city manager of the City of Canton to be effective immediately, with the request that City Council agree to provide me with six months salary and all other benefits as stipulated in my current employment agreement with the City of Canton.”

Wood did not return calls for further comment.

After the meeting Mayor Gene Hobgood said Wood’s resignation was not a surprise to him.

“We appreciate the job that he did while he was here, and we wish him well in any future endeavor that he has,” Hobgood said.

The mayor said there were some “discussions” with Wood prior to his resignation. When asked to elaborate on what was discussed, he said it was a “personnel matter.”

“I think the basic situation is that during the last election, I think that the voters pretty much made an indication that they wanted to move in a little different direction, and so this is an opportunity for that to happen,” Hobgood said.
