If the area’s cool, wet weather continues much longer, Central Virginia fruit farmers could be in trouble, state agriculture officials say.

So far, the wet weather has been a boon, and peach farmers in Albemarle County are optimistic for this year’s crop.

However, right now, for things to progress in a positive fashion, the weather needs to warm up and dry out a little. Without a few hot days to peaches will not be able to sweeten.

“If cool, wet, windy conditions continue, it’s going to be a real problem,” Elaine Lidholm, a Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services spokeswoman, said late last week. “If it heats up and gets dry in the next 10 days or so, everything should be fine.”
