Tybee City Council voted unanimously Thursday to approve $200,000 for replacing 3,700 feet of sewage line following a July 13 pipe rupture that spewed nearly 75,000 gallons of raw sewage into a nearby ditch.

According to Mayor Jason Buelterman and councilmen Barry Brown and Paul Wolff, the city has been aware the sewer lines, constructed in 1972, are an issue.

“Our engineers did a study in 2009 saying we should replace this thing,” Buelterman said. “I think they expected it to last 50 years … but it didn’t last that long, so we are replacing it now. And instead of just patching it, we are going to do the whole thing.”
