Al Tillman, former president of the Macon-Bibb County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, announced Sunday he’s running for a seat on the newly consolidated Bibb County government.
Tillman, who is also a member of the Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission, made the announcement at his home in the Bloomfield community in front of a small group of family members and friends that included Macon Mayor Robert Reichert, Bibb County Superior Court Judge Howard Simms, state Rep. Nikki Randall and Bibb County Solicitor-General Rebecca Grist.
“A lot of folks have been asking me about running for office,” Tillman said. “It’s time for me to step forward … I can’t afford to sit in the background and ask others to do what I’m not willing to do myself.”
Tillman, 44, who grew up in Macon’s Unionville community, is running in District 9.
