The Blackshear Times | Blackshear, Pierce County, Ga. > Opinion > FEY / SPLOST is a critical life-line to improving our county’s quality of life

On Nov 5th, we have a decision to make at the ballot box: Whether or not to support the restoration of our local Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). A recent letter to the editor expressed legitimate concerns about restoring the SPLOST. That letter writer’s misgivings about government waste are certainly shared by a vast majority. It is critical, though, that we cast a “yes” ballot and support restoration of the SPLOST initiative. Here’s why…

The SPLOST is the fairest and best revenue stream available to invest in the development of public amenities, resources and municipal services that improve the quality of life for current residents and encourage new businesses and people to move here. Besides public necessities such as reliable law enforcement vehicles, emergency medical transport vehicles and fire trucks, the SPLOST also provides the means to fund desirable community projects such as the possible relocation and expansion of our dated and confined recreation park. While every Pierce County resident may not have a child at rec department ball-field age, one thing we can all agree on is we’d rather have our community’s youth stealing home plate, than stealing from our homes.
