Sunday sales back on ballot – The Newnan Times-Herald

Two years after Palmetto narrowly voted against allowing Sunday sales of package alcohol, the question of accepting beer, wine, and liquor transactions will be on the ballot again in the Nov. 5 city election, along with a city council election.

Palmetto was the only city in the metro Atlanta area, and one of just a handful of cities and counties in the state, that rejected Sunday sales.

November 2011 was the first opportunity Georgians had to vote on the issue.

The vote then was 314-297 in Palmetto against package sales.

During the same election, Palmetto voters nevertheless approved Sunday alcohol sales by the drink by a vote of 309-298.

Palmetto City Manager Bill Shell said several stores have asked that the issue be put before voters once again.

Also on the ballot will be five candidates for three seats on the Palmetto City Council. All candidates run together, while voters choose three. Incumbents Laura Mullis, Lucinda Rockemore and Gregory Rusch are being challenged by Michael Arnold and Franklin Smith.

Early voting in the Palmetto races starts Monday at city hall and will be held from 9 to 5 p.m. City elections are still done on paper ballots, not on electronic voting machines, said Shell.
