Equipment in the power substation serving the Sharpsburg area malfunctioned Thursday morning, leaving more than 6,000 Cowetans without power in the sub-freezing temperatures.
According to Mary Ann Bell, vice president of public relations and communication for Coweta-Fayette EMC, the malfunction affected around 5,800 customers. According to John Kraft with Georgia Power, the malfunction affected around 1,000 additional Georgia Power customers.
The malfunction affected a main distribution line that supplied power to homes in Sharpsburg, Turin and other parts of southeastern Coweta County, Kraft said. The substation controlled lines for both Coweta-Fayette EMC and Georgia Power customers.
