If salaries of Macon police officers and Bibb County deputies are to be equalized after the law enforcement agencies merge next year, it would cost $1.4 million — not including benefits.

In preparation for the consolidation, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office finance staff compared information about Macon police officers’ salaries, rank and years of service to the sheriff’s office pay scale, said Sheriff David Davis.

The report shows 210 Macon officers are due raises if deputies and officers are to be paid equally. Of those officers, 37 could be due raises of $10,000 or more.

“You have some striking disparities between the police officers and the deputies,” many of whom have similar or identical job descriptions, Davis said.
