Springfield accepts donation of 19 acres on Ebenezer Creek | savannahnow.com

Springfield City Council members agreed unanimously at their Nov. 12 meeting to accept a donation of 19 acres on Ebenezer Creek.

The donation from Effingham County residents and mother and son, Marilyn and Scott Thompson, will be made with the help of the Georgia Conservancy.

Eventually, the city would like to have a multi-use trail from Springfield to Ebenezer, at the Savannah River. The trail would allow for conservation, hiking, bicycling and kayaking.

The land also would be part of the historic Effingham-Ebenezer Scenic Byway, a 60-mile trip through the towns of Ebenezer, Guyton, Springfield and Rincon.

Springfield Mayor Barty Alderman said it’s an “absolutely sweet property.” He hopes the donation will spark others to do the same.

“Keep us in mind,” he said. “It’s a long way down the creek to Ebenezer.”
