Sheriff Tom Brown raises $130,000 in challenge to Rep. Hank… | Political Insider | www.ajc.com

DeKalb County Sheriff Tom Brown has raised $130,000 for his quest to unseat to U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, a big figure for a primary challenge and one that cements the Fourth District as a serious race.

Johnson, D-Lithonia, has not submitted his year-end fundraising totals, but had $54,000 on hand at the end of September — a paltry sum for an incumbent. Brown enters the new year with $100,000 in the bank. He lent $20,000 of his own money to the campaign, as well.

Brown formally entered the race for the overwhelmingly Democratic seat in late October but had been raising money for months before that via an exploratory campaign.

Brown boasts an interesting cross section of support. His donors include Brad Alexander, a political consultant who was Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle’s former chief of staff; Jay Davis, the chief executive of National Distributing Co. and a big-time GOP donor, and state Sen. Emanuel Jones, the Democrat from Decatur.
