Sean Jerguson to run for Senate to succeed Chip Rogers

“I think it was extremely important that someone from Cherokee County wins this seat and provide the conservative leadership that we need,” he said.

Jerguson said he does not have to resign to announce he’s running, but noted he has to resign from his State House District 21 seat before he formally qualifies.

Sources close to Georgia Department of Transportation Board Member Brandon Beach, Rogers’ opponent in the July Republican primary, say he is close to a decision on running again for the seat.

Jerguson said he’s garnered dozens of emails and phone calls from supporters, asking him to run for the seat.

The state representative said he’s gotten support from most of Cherokee County’s legislative delegation members, such as State Rep.-elect Michael Caldwell (R-Woodstock), State Sen. Barry Loudermilk (R-Cassville), State Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell) and State Rep. Calvin Hill (R-Hickory Flat).

State Rep. Sean Jerguson is running for the Senate seat recently vacated by Chip Rogers.

Jerguson, R-Holly Springs, announced to the Ledger-News just after noon today.

“I met with the governor’s staff this morning,” Jerguson said.

Jerguson must resign his seat as the State House representative for District 21, but wants to ensure the timing is right, so Gov. Nathan Deal can call for a special election for both the House District 21 and State Senate District 21 seats, so it will not cost the taxpayers more money.

Rumors have been circulating that Rep. Calvin Hill, R-Hickory Flat, would run for the senate seat, which Jerguson said is not going to happen.

“Calvin is not running for this seat and has given me his endorsement,” Jerguson said.

Hill told the Ledger-News that it wasn’t the right time for him.

“It just wasn’t the right decision for me or us at this time in life,” Hill said. “Sean has the ability to be a leader, he’s fully knowledgeable of procedures what it takes to represent the county …”

The Ledger-News has spoken with other potential candidates since yesterday and indications show former District 21 candidate Brandon Beach will run. The Ledger-News is awaiting final confirmation from Beach.
