KATHLEEN — When it comes to the crisis in Syria, the goal is clear, U.S. Rep. Austin Scott told The Telegraph on Tuesday.
“The goal is to make sure that people who are willing to use chemical weapons do not have access,” he said.
But how to reach that goal has been a matter of heated debate and controversy in the past month. While President Barack Obama has discussed the possibility of military intervention in Syria, a new United Nations resolution requires Syria to hand over its chemical weapons, according to The Associated Press.
Scott, a Republican who represents Georgia’s 8th District, opposed U.S. military intervention in Syria, he told The Telegraph during a stop in Kathleen to celebrate Constitution Day at Mossy Creek Middle School.
“It simply didn’t meet the principles under which the United States should be willing to engage in an armed conflict in another country,” he said.
