School board again backs Macon Promise Neighborhood | Education | Macon.com

A reluctant Bibb County Board of Education again threw its support Thursday night behind the Macon Promise Neighborhood initiative that had embroiled the school system in controversy.

The vote came after one of the initiative’s leaders, Mercer University professor Peter Brown, vowed that mistakes of the last year wouldn’t be repeated.

Brown proposed a resolution that “commits the board to nothing at this point,” he said.

The Macon Promise Center initiative landed in controversy after The Telegraph reported that Bibb County staff members tripled the commitment that the school board had approved last summer. While the board offered up to $10 million, including cash and in-kind contributions, the total commitment to last year’s grant application included $10 million cash and nearly $20 million of in-kind contributions.
