Local Coastguardsmen, Marines and some sailors got to eat a Thanksgiving meal together Thursday courtesy of the Savannah Navy League.

The league fed about 90 Coastguardsmen and their families, about a dozen Marines and a couple of sailors up from Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay at Coast Guard Air Station Savannah. Food was also brought to about 40 crew and family members at the Coast Guard Station Tybee Island.

“They couldn’t believe it,” said Pat Yovich, president of the Savannah Navy League.

Food was served buffet style, and special permission was granted from Charleston, S.C., for members of the Coast Guard who were not on duty to have a beer or wine with their meal.

“This is a holiday when we have 15-20 of our 95 (Coastguardsmen) who are at work today,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. John Rivers, head of Air Station Savannah. “This is a great opportunity for them to enjoy Thanksgiving while at work.”
