Peach State Labs founder Rick Sargent wants to brings a major biofuel manufacturing facility to Rome in the next five to 10 years.
But he said getting past environmental regulations associated with Floyd County being a part of the non-attainment zone for air quality (PM 2.5 particulate pollution) is proving to be one of the obstacles to that project.
Sargent spoke to the Rome Kiwanis Club on Monday afternoon. The Rome native said that Soymet, another company he owns, sells 5.7 million gallons of B100 biodiesel each month.
“Today we supply 100 percent of the entire state fleets of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Florida with biofuel,” Sargent said. “We’re not through yet. Our hope is to build a very big facility here in Floyd County in the next 10 years, in the next five years.”
Sargent said he probably could move forward with his plans tomorrow if he set it up just across the state line in Alabama, but he wants to build it in Rome.
