RN-T.com – New eagle nest cam installed at Berry College

Georgia Power crews rose above the eagle nest at Berry College on Thursday to install a new camera that will allow viewers to peer into the nest itself during the upcoming breeding season.

Georgia Power contributed the truck and lift after Berry was unable to find equipment that could get a staff member up high enough to make the installation.

Jim Ozier, Georgia Department of Natural Resources non-game division chief, was on hand to help oversee the project from a biological perspective.

“The Fish and Wildlife Service does have some guidelines, but they’re pretty flexible,” Ozier said. “You don’t want to put something up there that’s going to jeopardize the eagles or keep them from returning, so you don’t want any cables or anything hanging out or any obstacles or sharp edges.”

This is a good time of year to do it, he added.

Berry College’s Eddie Elsberry said Sony donated the new camera. Data lines and computer feeds to the site were run by the IT department at Berry. The pictures will be available at www.berry.edu/eaglecam.
