The City of Rincon is strengthening its nuisance ordinance, making it easier to require property owners to clean up overgrown lots.

“If a lot is not maintained and it becomes a hazard or a nuisance to the community, we’ll have some ability to force them to maintain it or clean it up,” said City Manager Wesley Corbitt.

The revised ordinance has been approved on first reading and is scheduled to come before the city council on second reading on Aug. 11. Corbitt said details of the ordinance were still being drafted.

A vacant house or a commercial property that has high grass and scrub brush can attract snakes and hurt a neighbor’s property values, Corbitt said.

He said the new ordinance will have provisions for the city to notify a property owner to clean up and, if that doesn’t work, to pay for cleanup and recoup the cost from the property owner.
