Richard Petty expected to draw thousands to Byron raceway | Houston & Peach | Macon.com

BYRON — When Richard Petty sets foot on the historic Middle Georgia Raceway in August, it won’t be his first time. The NASCAR Hall of Famer raced on the track eight times and won four of those races.

Petty is the grand marshal of the Middle Georgia Racers Reunion, which will be held Aug. 31 at the raceway.

“Richard Petty is the Babe Ruth and Elvis of NASCAR,” Tim Thornton, general manager of the raceway, said at a news conference Monday at Jeff Smith Chevrolet. “He’s absolutely the man in stock car racing.”

A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Racers Reunion will go toward Victory Junction, a camp for children with serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions founded in honor of Petty’s late grandson, Adam.
