Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today took part in an Atlanta press conference, aimed at boosting Obamacare enrollment among Georgia mothers and women. After the event, Rep. Phil Gingrey, M.D., criticized Sebelius for misrepresenting Obamacare’s plans to Georgia families as cost-effective and mom-friendly.

“It is extremely disingenuous an unfair for Secretary Sebelius to carry on telling Georgia mothers that their families will be better off under Obamacare, knowing that many of the insurance marketplace’s flawed family plans fail to provide coverage for their kids. As a parent, and physician with more than 30 years experience, I know how harmful this law will be to doctors, Georgia parents and their children, which Is why I’ve pledged to repeal this ‘train wreck’ in my first term, or go home.”

Background:

Throughout Obamacare’s botched implementation, hundreds of thousands of Georgians and millions across the country have already lost coverage completely. As tens of millions more brace for more cancelled plans with the coming implementation of the law’s small business mandate, it is still mothers and their children who will suffer the most under Obamacare.

The law’s flawed design does not allow for children who qualify for Medicaid, but not exchange plans. Therefore, the gap in coverage makes it impossible for thousands of children to get coverage with their families.

Obamacare was built on the assumption that plans including younger, healthier patients would be priced to partially subsidize the cost of older, more financially stable patients. For families that do have plans that cover their children, they will be forced to pay a higher price for coverage that their kids don’t even need.

Despite President Obama’s promise that families would save $2,500 of their premiums, the average family premium has grown by at lease $3,000 since 2008.

Obamacare increases Medicaid enrollments by up to 17 million, most of them men. This will decrease the quality of medical quality that women on Medicaid receive.

For women who purchase more comprehensive plans, the economic burden of Obamacare’s mandates and taxes will force them to change coverage. Women with chronic conditions and large families will simply be unable to afford the same quality of care they have and like.
