Reed, Isakson to tour Panama Canal – Atlanta Business Chronicle

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., will accompany Vice President Joe Biden next week on a tour of the Panama Canal.

Both politicians have been at the forefront of efforts to land federal funding for the planned deepening of the Port of Savannah.

The $652 million project will make Savannah Harbor deep enough to accommodate a new generation of super-sized containerized cargo ships that will be plying the Panama Canal after an expansion project there is completed in 2015.

Earlier this week, Gov. Nathan Deal announced he would ask the General Assembly this winter for $35 million for the port project. That would complete the $266 million state share of the project’s funding, 40 percent of the total price tag.

The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate recently passed a comprehensive water resources bill that authorizes the port project, a key step toward securing federal funding.
