A bill making “The Adoptable Dog” the official state dog also heads to the governor’s desk. It is the final bill by outgoing state Rep. Joe Wilkinson (R-Sandy Springs) who says it’s needed to draw attention to the plight of homeless dogs and cats.

“It’s estimated the state of Georgia has 500,000 homeless animals every year,” he says.

Wilkinson says since he first introduced the bill last year, thousands have been adopted thanks to the publicity.
