It was modeled after an ordinance passed by the city of Savannah four years ago, but that’s where the similarities between the smoke-free air ordinance supported by Pooler voters Tuesday and the ordinance in Savannah come to an end.
While the Savannah City Council in 2010 faced strong opposition when it voted 7-2 to limit smoking in public, Pooler voters by an overwhelming majority this week passed the referendum designed to prohibit smoking in enclosed public places.
The Pooler referendum passed with 3,749 votes — nearly 82 percent — in favor of restricting smoking in the city, leaving 791 voters — fewer than 18 percent — casting ballots against.
Pooler City Clerk Maribeth Lindler said Wednesday city staff is working to draft an ordinance for approval by the city council. Lindler said the new ordinance will likely go into effect Jan. 1.
