If the governor’s race between Nathan Deal and Jason Carter had been pushed into a runoff election, as the polls seemed to indicate way back in September and October, that runoff would have been held today.
There is no runoff, of course, because Deal pulled away in the final weeks of the campaign and Libertarian candidate Andrew Hunt’s support never amounted to much, giving the governor a 53-45 percent general election victory over Carter.
Deal’s internal pollster, John McLaughlin, is taking a late victory lap this week with the assistance of Todd Rehm, a GOP blogger and consultant who’s written an insider account of McLaughlin’s polling for the Townhall website.
As Rehm tells it, McLaughlin and Deal’s campaign aides were so convinced that the undecided vote would break for Deal – as indeed it did – that they stopped polling on Oct. 23, nearly two weeks before election day.
