State Senate District 9 candidate Timothy Swiney (D) has announced his support for a consumption tax that would replace both the state income tax and the property tax on owner-occupied residential properties.
“Under a sales tax, or FairTax plan, taxes are based on what a person consumes rather than what they produce,” Swiney said in a released statement. “Homeowners should not be targeted and used as an ATM for excessive government spending. Hard work and financial responsibility should not be subject to tax penalties. Under a sales tax, all residents of Georgia, documented or undocumented, renter or homeowner, will carry a fair share of the tax burden.”
Swiney added that tax reform should be an issue that transcends party politics.
“Republicans and Democrats may have core differences and disagreements as to how tax dollars should be spent, but both parties should be willing to work together to insure a fair and equitable distribution of the tax burden,” he said. “Elimination of the income tax and the residential property taxes are issues that will benefit Georgia’s working families and small businesses.”
Swiney will face Republican P.K. Martin in the November election.
