PACs bankrolling early stage of Senate race – Atlanta Business Chronicle

This story illustrates why the Atlanta Business Chronicle is required reading for political junkies in the Peach State.

Most of Georgia’s high-profile business leaders are still on the sidelines early in the Republican race to succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

Congressional incumbents who already have entered the contest or are giving out strong hints they will do so have received most of their contributions from perennially active political action committees PACs representing a host of corporate interests.

That likely will start to change when competitors for the 2014 GOP Senate nomination get their first chance to strut their stuff on the same stage during the May 17-18 state Republican convention in Athens.

“It’s a show of strength,” said Kerwin Swint, a political science professor at Kennesaw State University. “[Candidates] want their supporters to wear their buttons and show their signs. … That’s where your activists are and where your money is.”
