The first step toward fixing a longstanding problem with the Ocmulgee River levee may be taken by Macon City Council soon.
During annual inspections, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has found evidence of seepage beneath the levee, near the site of a previous repair, when the river was high — as it has been after this summer’s record rains.
“They believe a slightly larger area could potentially suffer from seepage and sand boils,” according to a project outline accompanying the city resolution. A sand boil occurs when water is forced up through a bed of sand.
The resolution, scheduled to be heard Monday by the council’s Appropriations Committee, is to approve a contract with Cranston Engineering Group of Augusta for up to $76,743 for engineering work on the repair.
