WARNER ROBINS — Taxes will not increase for residents of Houston County this year.

The Houston County Commission approved a 9.95 millage rate for the 2014 fiscal year at a meeting Monday. The millage rate in 2013 was also 9.95.

Commission Chairman Tommy Stalnaker boasted that Houston County has one of the lowest millage rates in Middle Georgia.

Houston County’s tax digest increased by about 1.2 percent, giving the county a $472,569 increase in tax revenue.

A fire tax of 1.18 mills in unincorporated areas, also unchanged from 2013, was approved by commissioners as well.

The general fund budget for fiscal 2014 is $51.6 million, slightly more than it was last year. The total budget is $115 million. County employees are getting raises even though tax rates will stay the same.

“The government could not work without taxpayers,” Stalnaker said at Monday’s meeting. “We work for the taxpayers.”
