It’s a New Year and with it comes new faces to join the Canton City Council. Yet, the new council will confront some of the same issues from 2013.
Last year was full of discussions on Canton’s Insurance Service Office fire rating and differing view points between council members regarding who should control Canton’s fire services — the city or the county. This year, the new council members, Ward I Councilwoman Sandy McGrew, Ward II Councilman Bill Grant and Ward III Councilman John Rust, all plan to continue discussion, and hopefully come to a resolution, of what will happen with Canton’s fire departments. All three of the new council members stated that fire services is a critical issue that needs to be addressed right away.
“I believe the fire safety issue needs to be one of our first priorities. Canton firefighters continue to do their very best for the community, and we need to determine the best course of action and lay this issue to rest,” McGrew said. “This new council must weigh all of the options and do what is right, by securing the best services in the most cost effective manner.”
Grant agreed that fire service is a “big issue” that needs to be discussed in a timely manner and informed decisions need to be made.
“One of the first decisions should be what is the best solution for building a fire station in the Laurel Canyon vicinity,” he said. “These decisions should be guided by how to deliver the highest-quality service at the least cost to taxpayers.”
Rust said that Laurel Canyon was promised a fire station, and he agrees there is a need for one to be there.
