New Skidaway Island bridge opened to traffic | savannahnow.com

The Diamond Causeway Bridge to Skidaway Island opened up to traffic Saturday after construction complications delayed its opening for almost a year.

Despite the issues, the bridge now meets all the state’s requirements in terms of safety and quality, said Jill Nagel, spokesman for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The contractor, United Contractors, is now dismantling the 40-year-old drawbridge the new structure replaced, said project manager Donald Anderson. A controlled blast will be used to pulverize the concrete piers next month and the cleanup should be completed by February next year, Anderson said.

The bridge was originally supposed to be opened by Nov. 30, 2012, but work was brought to a halt that August after it was discovered some of the girders put in place did not meet design requirements.

After a delay of almost six months, work resumed in February.
