At the midpoint in their nesting season, Georgia’s loggerhead sea turtles are posting an average year. As of June 20, 465 nests had been recorded on barrier island beaches.

That’s only about half as many as the same point last year, but 2013 was a record breaker, as were each of the three prior years.

The current slowdown was not unexpected and is the result of natural variability, said Mark Dodd, senior wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. He’s predicting the season will produce 1,000-1,200 nests, putting it close to the state’s 25-year average.
