National Farmers Market Week easy to celebrate in northeast Georgia | Online Athens

Across the country, farmers markets have opened at a fast clip in the last two decades, expanding in number by 700 percent since the mid-1990s, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Farmers Market Week, which runs until Saturday, was created by the USDA to promote farmers markets. The USDA registered 7,500 farmers markets in 2012. An examination of the USDA’s market database does show some inflation due to few markets in each region being counted twice. Nonetheless, the numbers are still quite high.

For Athens Farmers Market Manager Jan Kozak, the week is just about “more awareness for the general public.”
