Most veteran political observers think they know how the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate will turnout: Michelle Nunn routing her opponents.
By choosing to run under her maiden name instead of her husband’s, Nunn is expected to piggyback on her father’s reputation earned during 25 years in the Senate. Despite his having been out of office for 17 years, he has powerful political contacts and a nationwide network of supporters gained while chairing the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Besides his donors, she has her own, developed from her career raising money across the country for the Points of Light Foundation she runs.
At the Democratic Party of Georgia’s major fundraising dinner last month with 1,100 in attendance, party officials made no pretense that the other three candidates had any chance of winning. One of the three, Steen Miles, decried the performance as a “coronation” of Nunn.
Nunn is also operating under the assumption that she’s certain to win the nomination and has refused to appear on stage with her opponents. Last week, she held a fundraiser of her own in Washington where she grew up rather than attend a forum in Albany, angering event organizers.
Nevertheless, polls show she has an overwhelming lead.
Without offering specific stands on most issues, her main argument is that she would be a centrist in Washington who could work with both sides of the aisle, helping to end partisan clashes.
“Politicians [are] fighting and bickering and too often forgetting about the people they’re supposed to represent,” she said in one of her ads.
