Michelle Nunn, the daughter of former senator Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), announced Monday that she will run for Senate in 2014.

Georgia remains a red state, but it is a top Democratic target in 2014 given their dearth of fertile takeover opportunities and the fact that it’s an open seat. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) is retiring.

Democrats are hopeful that a less-electable Republican emerges from the primary field. Establishment Republicans have expressed concerns that Reps. Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey could turn the race competitive if they win the nomination, similar to other recent controversial GOP Senate nominees.
