Memorial effort for fallen trooper that began in Hall County continues | AccessNorthGa

HINESVILLE – A memorial effort that began in Hall County almost two years ago is continuing its trek around the state via law enforcement personnel.

The Cpl. Chad LeCroy GSP 744 Memorial has been traveling with state and local law enforcement personnel for 647 days – since Oct. 10, 2011 – remembering LeCroy of the Georgia State Patrol, who was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 27, 2010.

LeCroy, 38, was one of eight law enforcement officers killed in Georgia in 2010, and among the 162 killed in the nation.

The memorial was started by John Stewart of Talmo, then-senior steward of Johnnie’s Hill Lodge No. 748 in Pendergrass.

Stewart said the inspiration for the memorial tribute came from a saying in Masonry.

“There are four boxes in America that defend freedom and liberty – one being the soapbox; second being the ballot box; third being the jury box; and fourth being, if necessary, the ammo box,” Stewart said in 2011. “That was the inspiration for the ammo box.”

“That is a PA 108 50-caliber ammo box,” Stewart said.

The metal box continues to ride with the men and women of Georgia law enforcement for 744 days, with each logging their name and departmental information during the 744 minutes it rides with them. It then will be presented to LeCroy’s family.
