Douglas County District Attorney David McDade said this morning that he will retire at the end of the month and that there will be no criminal prosecution as the result of an exhaustive probe into him and his office.
In an exclusive interview with the Douglas County Sentinel, McDade said that he will leave office at the end of the month and will pay back about $4,000 that was called into question, but not deemed illegal in any way, “just to make sure that there can be no questions” about his service to the people of Douglas County.
McDade and his attorney Drew Findling finalized a non-prosecution agreement that was signed by Georgia Senior Assistant Attorney General David McLaughlin on Tuesday. The AG’s office supplied a redacted copy of the agreement to verify its validity, but declined comment.
“More than nine months ago I asked for an independent investigation by an outside agency – after a GBI probe, a county audit and an audit and investigation by the Georgia Attorney General’s Office – after one of the most extensive investigations that any agency in this state has ever faced – they found nothing that they felt was worthy of criminal prosecution,” McDade said.
At a press conference at Findling’s office on Wednesday, McDade’s attorney said that in addition to the GBI, AG and county scrutiny, he hired investigators to search as well and no evidence of criminal activity by McDade was ever found. He said it was his health and his wish to do right by the people who elected him to bring this to an end.
“The $4,000, I will not get into specifics, represents issues regarding spending in the office that we looked at and made a decision. Rather than get into long, protracted negotiations the easiest practice would be just to write a check,” said Findling.
