Macon presses Bibb County on summer recreation | Politics | Macon.com

Macon City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday asking Bibb County to do everything possible to provide more recreation, especially public pools, this summer.

City recreation facilities, including pools, passed to county control in July 2012 as part of a service delivery agreement. The city usually opened pools on Memorial Day weekend, but this year Bibb County opened three on Tuesday, plans to open two more later, and won’t open the Freedom Park pool at all this summer.

Over the last week council members have had harsh words for county officials, but Tuesday night Councilwoman Elaine Lucas softened the tone.

“This resolution in no way criticizes the county,” she said. Council is just reflecting public concern that there will be fewer pools open for about 25,000 students out for the summer, and that it will be a longer trek for many to the three now open, Lucas said.
