Macon City Council’s Appropriations Committee spent nearly four-and-a-half hours Wednesday afternoon going through the proposed Fiscal 2014 budget for the Macon Police Department.

The $19.89 million proposed budget for the police department is the highest budget among city departments that the city pays for on its own. The budget for the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department is more, but the county contributes to those expenses.

It also marked the first budget hearing for Interim Police Chief Mike Carswell.

“It was much longer than I expected, and there were a lot of questions, but it was a very interesting experience,” Carswell said. “It gives a picture of what they are trying to do.”

Council members questioned a variety of line items in the budget, as well as why certain budget decisions were made.
